Sustainability is a big word - and the concept it represents is even bigger. For us, it is more than a way of farming. It is a way of life. It is finding a balance between us and our environment, which is everything around us: our family and friends, economy, food, ecosystem, and even our minds. It is a constant work in progress.

hoophouse in springIn terms of our farm, we might define sustainability as gathering the bounty of the land using as little input as possible (including fossil fuels in all its permutations), while preserving or better yet improving the fertility of the soil for future harvests. We try to keep our farm's energy cycle on the farm by using compost, intelligent garden design, and human power. And we try to keep the harvest near the farm, too, by keeping distribution to a minimum.

We all have to do our part in sustainability. This goes beyond "organic". It is far more important than almost anything else we can do. We are fast outstripping our planet's resources. Soil is eroding at an allarming rate, as population booms. We are polluting the water we drink, clouding the air we breathe and poisoning the food we eat. We are not separate from the world around us - we absolutely depend on its health.

Consider this a plea. Check out the links on our sustainability reference page . We are more than what we eat - very truthfully, we are our environment.
